The Connecticut Fire Academy will begin its 15th year of providing high school students with an exciting and educational look at the Fire Service in a six-day, residential summer program.

On Tuesday, June 21, 30 16- and 17-year old students from 22 fire departments will report for their first day of training. Cadets will receive education in fire service organization, chain of command, mission and core values. Students will participate in several hands-on training evolutions, where they will build skills in handling fire hose, carrying, placing and using ground ladders, performing searches for trapped victims and forcing entry into burning buildings.

Participating fire departments include, Andover, Broad Brook, Canton, Colchester-Hayward, Coventry, Enfield, Gales Ferry, Gaylordsville, Haddam, Hebron, Litchfield, New Hartford, Niantic, Noroton, Portland, Taftville, Trumbull Co. 1, Wallingford, West Haven, and Winsted.

Several dynamic group exercises that emphasize teamwork will be held over the course of the program. Each night, Fire Service leaders from different disciplines within the career track, such as Training, EmergencyMedical Services, Fire Investigation and Equipment Repair will discuss their roles, responsibilities, and the education and training required to achieve their respective position. Students will also travel off campus to events, such as the New England Fire Chief's Expo in Springfield, Mass. to view the latest advances in firefighting technology and equipment. The class will also travel to Washington, Conn., and participate in the Fire Department Parade in support of the Washington Volunteer Fire Department.

The June Session will bring another first for the Introduction to the Fire Service program. For the first time, two Junior Counselors will join the ranks of the instructor cadre. After a months-long competitive application and selection process, which included requirements for a 3.0 GPA, submission of multiple letters of recommendation and appearing before an oral board interview, two alumni from the 2010 class were selected to assist in the planning, preparation and delivery of the program.

Class will be in session each day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The graduation ceremony, culminating in an exciting simulated apartment building fire, will commence at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 26, at the Connecticut Fire Academy campus, located at 34 Perimeter Road, Windsor Locks.
