East Lyme — Two dogs survived a fire that caused extensive damage Wednesday morning to a two-story home at 42 Charter Oak Drive.
Neville Hall, who lives on Charter Oak Drive, said he was driving with his two daughters, when he saw smoke coming from the house.
He knocked on the door, rang the door bell and heard dogs barking. When he went to the side of the home, he saw a side window fall out and fire come out.
Veronica Chambers was also driving in the area and called 911. She was going to hold on to the dogs, one who appeared to be a Cocker Spaniel and the other a long-haired Dachshund.
"Smoke was just pouring out of the roof," said Chambers.
Fire Marshal Dick Morris said the home was unoccupied at the time. The fire was called in at 11:30 a.m.
Even though the fire was quickly contained, it damaged the left rear of the home.
What appeared to be a second-story bedroom received the brunt of the damage, with clothes hanging from where a window would have been.
Firefighters also had to cut two holes on the roof to vent the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
In addition to the Flanders Fire Department, Niantic and an Old Saybrook FAST team also responded.
