Niantic firefighters carry the victim of a diving accident to an awaiting LIFE STAR helicopter for transport to Hartford Hospital at Rocky Neck State Park in Niantic Friday afternoon May 13, 2011. The young adult male was extricated from the water by members of the Niantic Fire Department and was flown to Hartford with back injuries sustained in the accident.

East Lyme — A 19-year-old man was taken by LIFE STAR helicopter to Hartford Hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained while jumping off the rocks at Rocky Neck State Park into shallow water this afternoon.

Niantic Fire Department rescue crews moved him out of the water and called LIFE STAR, said Ron Pringle, retired chief of the Niantic department. Town rescue crews assisted Lawrence & Memorial Hospital paramedics in providing treatment at the scene. The man was identified as Scott O'Brien of South Windsor.

Pringle said O'Brien jumped off rocks west of the beach area, past the stone jetty, pavilion building and picnic area. A companion with O'Brien helped pull him toward shore before rescue crews arrived, he said. LIFE STAR landed on a grassy area in front of the pavilion.

As of late this afternoon, O'Brien was being treated in the emergency department at Hartford Hospital. No information was available on his condition.
