East Lyme — A home at 20 Damon Heights Road sustained minor damage today when an electrical meter caught on fire.

The noontime fire was contained to the outside of the 1,200-square-foot building after a neighbor called 911 and helped Stanley and Patricia Moskal leave their home.

“The neighbor saw part of the house on fire and knocked on the door,” said Deputy Fire Marshal Chris Taylor.

Taylor said the fire was called in at 12:06 p.m. and had been extinguished within 15 minutes after the arrival of the Niantic and Flanders fire departments.

The fire, which resulted in only exterior damage to the ranch-style house, was blamed on a loose lug that caused the meter to short out.

The couple was expected to be able to return to their home today once power was restored.
