East Lyme—A house fire on Roxbury Road early this morning claimed the life of one cat, but no one was injured.

Firefighters from the Niantic and Flanders Fire Departments responded at 3:07 a.m. to the fire at a two-family home at 64 Roxbury Road.

One room on the bottom floor of the house sustained heat and smoke damage, according to Niantic Deputy Fire Chief Jim Barone. The fire was contained within 15 or 20 minutes and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Firefighters tried to revive the cat but were unsuccessful. One other cat escaped the fire.

The Red Cross also responded to the fire and provided the two families with financial assistance for emergency food, clothing and baby needs, according to a statement from the organization.
