East Lyme — The cause of a fire that extensively damaged a dining hall at Camp Niantic Sunday evening appears to have been electrical in nature.
Fire Marshal Richard Morris said Monday while the investigation is ongoing, it appears that an electrical cord from a refrigeration unit that was plugged into an outlet may have caused the fire. Building 28, an older mess hall, was damaged in the blaze. Firefighters from East Lyme, Niantic and Flanders responded to the blaze, which started around 7:15 p.m. and was extinguished within about 45 minutes.Up until this year, Camp Niantic was named after the current governor. It was known as Camp Rell until its name was changed permanently to Camp Niantic.
